Market signal

Brent tops $100 for the first time since July. Brent traded above $100/bbl and WTI near $96 Wednesday as the US-Iran tanker war widened overnight, extending a rally that has now run for a third straight week on fears of a deeper Gulf supply disruption. Bloomberg (paywall)

European gas breaks €80 for the first time since January 2023; Henry Hub keeps easing. Dutch TTF futures rose as much as 6.8% to €80.99/MWh — prices have more than doubled since the Middle East war began — as the conflict chokes off a Hormuz corridor that carried roughly a fifth of global LNG trade before the war, even as US Henry Hub eased further to about $2.87/MMBtu on fading cooling demand. Upstream — exploration & production

CENTCOM says it has now destroyed 10 Iranian "shadow fleet" tankers in a week; Iran claims it hit two US destroyers and eight more tankers. US Central Command said Tuesday's strike on five more Iranian crude carriers brings the week's total to 10 vessels it says fund the IRGC, and separately called "completely false" an IRGC claim of striking two US Navy destroyers, saying no American warship has been hit and every Iranian attempt failed. Iran's Revolutionary Guard countered that it struck two US-linked vessels and eight oil tankers transiting a corridor Tehran has declared off-limits — a claim Washington has not confirmed — making this the broadest single exchange of tanker attacks since the conflict began. Citadel is in talks to buy US shale production assets. The hedge fund and commodities trading giant has held discussions with private-equity owners of oil-weighted E&P companies about acquiring a producing platform, Reuters reports, after it lost the bidding for Eagle Ford operator WildFire Energy to Magnolia Oil & Gas in July — the latest sign that non-traditional capital is moving further into physical shale production. Midstream — pipelines, LNG & shipping

Europe and Asia are bidding against each other for the LNG that isn't coming from the Gulf. With the Hormuz corridor's roughly 20% share of global LNG trade still effectively cut off, European buyers are racing to fill storage before winter even as inventories sit near 67% full versus an 83% seasonal norm, a gap the IEA has flagged in calling for members to weigh emergency reserve measures. Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals

No material downstream news beyond the still-unresolved Jazan outage already reported; no new restart timeline or throughput figures have surfaced since Tuesday.

The Chatter

Art Berman (artberman.com): Berman argues the Iran war is less a passing crisis than a "phase shift" for industrial civilization — a durable change in how energy is produced, secured and priced — and that a weaker, more indebted, more fragmented world economy than in the 1970s may struggle to absorb a shock of this size regardless of how the fighting itself resolves. Post

Phil Flynn — The PRICE Futures Group ("The Energy Report"): Flynn frames the strikes on Iranian tankers near Kharg Island as another hit to the "Iran piggy bank" funding the regime, arguing the losses should be signaling to Tehran that it cannot win the war and that closing the strait or hitting its neighbors only deepens its own isolation.
